From Research to Reality – CoolPOF Technology at COMPUTEX 2015 in Taipei

ELCON manufactured prototypes of POF media converters were recently deployed in a live demo at the largest ICT trade show in Asia. The HomeGrid Forum, an industry alliance promoting the G.hn standard, displayed a live demo of G.hn over Plastic Optical Fiber (POF). The idea behind the G.hn is to employ one network device for all media resulting in a cost-efficient, energy-saving and consumer friendly private network solution.

The POF technology applied in the demo setup is the result of the research project CoolPOF that was funded by the European Union. ELCON and its project partners Teleconnect and ZAFT e. V. developed and manufactured the prototype of a fiber media converter that meets the efficiency demands of G.hn and can be applied with Step Index POF (SI-POF). SI-POF is a low-cost, highly flexible fiber for in-house networks. The prototype setup based on a G.hn compliant chipset by Marvell Technology Group provides bidirectional data rates of up to 1 Gbit/s for in-home distribution. The flexible, 1mm thin fiber has a variable length between 60 and 150 meters.
