Data transfer in real-time?

albis-elcon is researching into optical short-range communication.

Werner Neubauer, CEO of albis-elcon: “The time has come that German communication technologies will regain a leading position in the world market. ‘fast optics’ will allow us to follow this path side by side with our research partners, and to strengthen our innovative power significantly through this cooperation.”

Within the program „Zwanzig20 – Partnerschaft für Innovation“, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), albis-elcon together with ComNets (Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks) and IPD (Integrated Photonic Devices) from Technical University of Dresden is part of the project “fast optics”. The project is part of the FAST cluster and aims at the development of new, innovative real-time systems for enabling coincident data transfers in the future.

The fast optics project deals with a new type of short-range communication systems, using virtualization mechanism like NFV combined with SDN. The idea of realizing data transfer no longer by wi-fi but by light with the help of optical signals via infrared radiation allows the user not only to reduce the latency down to one millisecond, but also to guarantee enhanced security of the communication link. The chosen technology may be used independent of ambient light, and thus enables the application of less expensive communication devices. A further advantage of infrared radio communication is the radiation that is harmless for health – a fact, which is not the case with current wireless transmission technologies that are based on electromagnetic fields.

As a project partner, albis-elcon provides its optical communication modules, thus offering the needed platform for the research work. At its German location in Hartmannsdorf, Saxony, albis-elcon has available the required equipment for producing prototypes, models and serial devices. Next to this, albis-elcon is involved into system integration and assumes the role of supporting and testing partner in the project. With its competence albis-elcon helps research topics in the fields of 5G and industry 4.0 move forward. Following its self-defined aim always being one step ahead, albis-elcon integrates the findings gained in the project into company innovations, to develop and constantly improve its solutions, such as access modules, uKernel OS, SDN and MetroIntegrator constantly.
